Celebrating Women's Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide, and we all have different reasons why we celebrate this remarkable day.  In South Africa, Women’s Day is one of the most important holidays; not only do we honor women for themselves, we also celebrate the women of South Africa who played such an important role during the apartheid times in making it the democratic country it is today.  As a youth led organization, it was important for us to teach our members about women’s history in South Africa, as well as to show appreciation for our mothers, sisters and late grandmothers.

In celebrating this year’s Women’s Day, we invited the mothers, sisters, and young women in our community to come and spend the day with us.  We prepared an inspirational program that included successful women who had experienced difficulties growing and making a success of themselves.  These strong women came to talk with and inspire our women with stories of how they overcame challenges and reached their life goals.  We also had discussions about teenage pregnancy and about how our mothers can help their children overcome the many social issues we face in our community. The discussions had such a positive impact; not only were our mothers participating in the sessions, our young girls were also interested in being part of the whole conversation.

Of course, one of the best parts of the day was to see the KYP men preparing the food for all of the women who attended.  The guys did a great job, and prepared a nice lunch which all of the women enjoyed eating.

Women’s Day is the day when every single woman should be appreciated and reminded of how important she is.  As youth being given the opportunity to honor the women in our community, it was such a blessing to be able to provide Kliptown’s women with a great day filled with dignity and respect.
